Green Schools Committee Have Been Springing Into Action

The Green Schools team have been very busy continuing our efforts to increase the levels of awareness and responsibility to the effects of litter and waste in the school.
Our work was given a major boost by Tesco Ireland who generously sponsored our team with by giving us €300 worth of vouchers for goods to use for our Green Schools competitions and promotions.
Following a survey of the students our Green Schools Secretary Jennifer Mannion and Audit Leader Magdalena Grochola travelled to Galway to collect the vouchers and purchased a Samsung Galaxy tablet, three Sony headphones sets, three €15 iTunes vouchers and a huge variety of sweets to put into hampers.
At the schools assembly Magdalena Grochola and Jackie Conway presented the students information about the work the Green Schools team are doing to increase the students levels of awareness about the effects of litter and waste in the school and how these have then have impacts globally.
One of the major contributors to the levels of waste being generated in the school had been as identified as the waste plastic bottles. To highlight this issue the team collected the empty plastic bottles which were left as litter around the school for approximately two weeks into a net hanging in the hallway.
As the net was gradually, filled up with plastic – the quantities of the plastic bottles that were being wasted became even more evident. Now that the net is full, we have launched a competition, where students are being asked to guess the amount of bottles that are in the net and how much all these bottles would cost. Three entries with the closest answers will win a giant one of our three giant sweet hampers! The closing date for submitting entries is Friday – 11th of April.
The schools Board of Management have also given the project great support by sanctioning the instillation of a new filter tap in the school, by Kay’s Canteen. Now everyone in the school can easily refill their water bottles instead of having to constantly buy a new disposable bottle.
Composting is another one of the projects our team have implemented in the school. We set up a composting bin outside the school and the compostable waste from the staff room and Home Economics rooms are now being collected and composted daily.
Congratulations to the winner of our Temple Street phone recycling appeal Mary Burke who won the €100 One For All Voucher.  All of the people who donated a phone this year are still entered into a competition  to win an IPad II from the Temple Street recycling team, so good luck everyone who have donated a phone.
Lastly: We are also recruiting new members for the Green Schools committee and all new members are welcome. We need creative people with fresh ideas, girls who are willing to help with and promote our actions.
Wishing you all a Happy Easter from all of the Green Team!
