Nicole Loughlin, Mayo Rose 2019, visited TY students to discuss the progress of her ‘Let’s make it happen’ school
building project. TY students in Presentation College Tuam made maroon & white supporter bands for the Connacht final in Tuam Stadium in January & raised a total of €300. Our school was one of twenty seven schools in the local area to get involved with the campaign.
Nicole, a former student of Presentation College Headford, spoke of her recent trip to Malawi where she ‘broke the ground’ of her, two roomed secondary school on St. Patrick’s Day. She explained how the summer previous she visited a rural primary school in the area where students were repeating 6th class several times to avoid getting married & having children early in life. Nicole recognised that a secondary school was greatly needed for the future development of the area & to give young people a chance to progress further in education.
The new secondary school is planned to be opened by late August & ‘Presentation College Tuam’ will be engraved on two desks in the classroom along with the names of all other local pre-schools, primary schools & secondary schools who got involved. Due to the great success of this campaign, Nicole is planning the construction of a second post-primary school as she has raised more than double her original target of €11,000 to date.
Presentation College Tuam would like to wish Nicole every success with the construction of the school in Malawi & as the Mayo Rose in the Rose of Tralee in August. We look forward to welcoming Nicole back to the Pres again next year as part of our Worldwise Global School’s Development Education programme & to talk about the opening of the school.
