On Friday the 17th of April, ten first year students attended the TeenTech event in NUIG. This event was set up to encourage students to pursue careers in Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics.
At the event, students were given an idea of some of the careers they could do in each subject and met people who worked in each of these fields.
During the day the school groups, went to different ‘zones’ each providing different tasks and challenges to complete. In the Innovation zone students learned coding using a programme called Scratch, they were then given a challenge of building a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows in groups of two or three.
As the day progressed the school groups had to design an original video game or an app in half an hour, complete with pictures and storyline.
In the final zone many different companies such as HP and Medtronic who had set up challenges for the students to take part in and with prizes to be won. These included a virtual reality game, a Maplin’s computer programme, brainwave controlled cat ears, DNA extracting and many, many more.
At the end of the event there was a prize giving ceremony where the girls won a prize for the Best Artwork for our app called ‘Where?’ The students reported that they found the day great fun and very interesting and overall it was a ‘Great day’.
